John McCain and the Blessed Assurance

Yesterday, the family of Senator John McCain, the 81 year old Vietnam War hero and 2008 Republican presidential nominee announced that he has decided to stop treatment for the brain cancer he has been battling for over a year.

The elegantly written statement from the family said in part: “John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.”

In times like these when life is near its end we think of the family and friends who faced these end of life moments. And in times like these when life is near its end we also think about ourselves. For as John 14:1-2 tells us “Man who is born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble. 2 He comes forth like a flower and fades away; He flees like a shadow and does not continue.

While we do not know the day or the hour when our flower will fade away, we can have the blessed assurance of an eternal place with God. Jesus has told us “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25)

John McCain’s life is slipping away, Marben Bland’s life is slipping away, all of our lives are slipping away. The question for all of us is where will we spend eternity? Jesus has gone to prepare a room for us in God’s house. When realities or age, illness and medicine render their verdict my prayer is that you will have the blessed assurance that Jesus and life everlasting is yours.

May Godspeed, and may the Lord’s blessed assurance be with John McCain.
