Honoring Those Who Made The Ultimate Sacrifice

Let us honor our fallen heroes of war but let us give the ultimate honor and glory to our risen savior of peace Jesus Christ our Lord by creating more disciples for Christ.

Memorial Day is a day where we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

The Defense Department reports more than 1.1 million American soldiers have been killed in US wars and conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In his famed Gettysburg Address President Abraham Lincoln said we must give honor and thanks to those who “gave the last full measure of devotion” And that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Memorial Day is a day where we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

Jesus Christ made the greatest ultimate sacrifice in the history of the world. His sacrificial death at Calvary to atone for the sins of mankind was the perfect demonstration of His own teaching in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
Jesus death on the cross, His supreme offering of His sinless life made it possible for our forgiveness, and our redemption and our new life as Disciples of Christ.

Therefore on this Memorial Day where we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. The question is as Disciples of Christ what are doing to honor the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus?

May I suggest the answer can be found in Matthew 28:16-20 in the verses we know as the Great Commission: Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

As Disciples of Christ our task to honor the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus is simple….we should go out and make more Disciples for Christ.

So on this Memorial Day as we enjoy:
• The wonderful food
• The various sporting events – Go Golden State in Game 7
• The extra sleep
